FR Luzzi - Happiness is an overestimated value
Delicate and sophisticated acoustic pop from Italy. FR Luzzi sounds like a cross between Elliott Smith and The Innocence Mission, and Francesca Luzzi's accented vocals are a delightful novelty that adds to the intimacy of her quiet arrangements. Happiness Is An Overestimated Value works as crisply produced bedroom-pop, enchanted by the occasional horn, shuffle, and piano. The playfulness of "Human Race" finds FR Luzzi in her stride, with light and brisk flourishes to her ironically pessimistic take on humanity. The result is a very clever and beautiful pop song submerged in high-brow adaptation. Sometimes simplicity is the greatest virtue, and "After Dark" works as a wonderful example, being stripped of all short of acoustic guitar, subtle percussion, and snippets of organ. Luzzi's grasp on the English language is cohesive and poetic, yet it bares an adolescent's innocence. This 9-song album is brilliantly delicate, yet void of hooks that make it necessary. FR Luzzi has crafted an empassioned artistic expression, and fans of such acoustic genres should take note. Otherwise, you might find this release an attempt that tries too hard and forgot the punchline. I find myslef somewhere in the middle...a casual fan hoping that Happiness Is An Overestimated Value only hints at what's to come of FR Luzzi.
